A smashin’ good time! [VIDEO]August 24, 2018
With a swing of their hammers, VGH staff made history on August 1.
The team of seven kicked off demolition on the third floor of Jim Pattison Pavilion North, where the new perioperative suite at VGH will be built.
“I’m excited about the future,” said Eugene Maguire, OR technician and demolition crew member. During his 32 years at VGH, Eugene has seen a lot of change. “The city is growing and the hospital needs to grow with it; the plans for our new suite are very exciting for the hospital and for the city.”
Alex Sayer, biomedical technologist, agrees. “I’m very much looking forward to working in the new suite and to the expansiveness of having an entire second floor as an addition,” said the first-time drywall demolisher.

Collaborative vision shapes the future of surgery
More than 150 physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and other staff have participated in exercises and meetings to shape the future of surgery at VGH. Patients and family representatives from the VCH Community Engagement Advisory Network (CEAN) have contributed to design plans too.
VGH OR Renewal Project clinical leads Drs. Rael Klein and Oliver Applegarth, Anesthesia; and Drs. Peter Gooderham and Kelly Lefaivre, Surgery, have been key team members providing input with the physician lens.
“When I was asked to join this project, I jumped at the opportunity to be able to play a role in shaping the future of, what I think is, a world-class surgical program,” said Dr. Lefaivre, addressing the event’s crowd.
“I really think we’ve accomplished what we set out to do,” she continued “Which is to design a perioperative suite that will serve our needs both today and tomorrow.”
With demolition now underway, the new suite is on schedule to open in January 2021.
“It’s really amazing that after 32 years when we started in JP OR in 1986 that we’re starting a whole new project and really thinking into the future,” said Patsy Lanigan, OR head nurse with sledgehammer in hand. “Maybe in another 32 years I can come back and do it all over again,” she added with a laugh. “It was fun!”
