FINAL REPORT: 2020 VCH MEDICAL STAFF DIVERSITY SURVEY

We are pleased to be able to share the results of the Medical Staff Diversity survey done in late 2020. It has taken time to share these results with you and for that we apologize, particularly to those who took the time to do the survey. Below is an infographic summarizing the results, and you can access the full report here. Over 450 medical staff (15%) participated in the 2020 survey, and we thank them for their contributions.  Rich qualitative data was drawn from the survey, and the themes and recommendations have helped to inform the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) work of both VCH and the Medical Staff DEI Committee over the past two years.  We heard and agree that DEI and anti-racism are important to medical staff and require action. Some highlights of the work done so far:

  • Creation of VCH DEI Director and team roles
  • Creation of VCH Regional Medical Director, DEI role
  • Creation of VCH Anti-Racism and Cultural Safety Team
  • Collection of qualitative data via physician focus groups (Women, People of Color)
  • Creation of a Women's Discussion Group, with planning underway to introduce several other groups for medical staff
  • Collected quantitative and qualitative data through survey of 2SLGBTQIA+ medical staff
  • DEI Leadership Mentorship Program Pilot, which is now moving into phase two
  • Reviewing and improving onboarding processes for medical staff (in progress)
  • Anti-racism engagement process with all staff
  • Leadership development and DEI training requirements for medical leadership roles
  • Review of VCH Search and Selection Standards of Practice with a DEI lens
  • DEI related educational/skills building events (Anti-Asian Racism series, Pride Series, Indigenous Medical Leaders Panel, Gender Pay Gap in Medicine and others)
  • Exploring DEI related Key Performance Indicators for medical leaders
  • Review of the reporting structure for experiences of discrimination
  • Unconscious Bias training for staff/medical staff
  • Indigenous Cultural Safety training for staff/medical staff

We know there is more work to be done, and that this is just a start. We thank all those who have supported and participated in all these initiatives and are excited about future plans.

We would like to acknowledge the work of Neli Remo and Salima Noormohamed in analyzing the data. The Co-Chairs of the Medical Staff DEI Steering Committee, would like to convey special thanks to the Meaningful Metrics Working Group and it's co-chairs, Drs. Andrea Brovender and Fahreen Dossa, and to Dr. Lynn Straatman for their tireless work on the diversity survey, final report and continued advocacy for more and better DEI data.

Earlier this year, the VCH wide, staff and medical staff, Self Identification and Workplace Experience Survey was completed, and almost 800 medical staff, and over 9000 total staff participated. This 2022 VCH wide survey looked at diversity similar to the 2020 Medical Staff survey, but also included inclusion, engagement and other valuable metrics. There will be more data to share from the 2022 survey and some comparisons can be made to the 2020 survey, although the surveys were quite different. We look forward to presenting these results in the next few months.

All of this work will guide our future efforts towards improved diversity, equity and inclusion, anti-racism and cultural safety at VCH. If you would like to get involved, find out more about the VCH Medical Staff DEI Committee here. If you have any questions about the 2020 Survey Report, please contact Salima.Noormohamed@vch.ca.

Sincerely,
