What does a harm reduction approach to health care look like when tertiary and community teams work collaboratively?

Join us for the first ethics education forum of 2023, where panelists from Raincity Housing, and our Indigenous Health and Overdose Emergency Response and Mental Health and Substance Use teams will discuss how working together to explore discharge options from tertiary inpatient programs into the community can support health outcomes and connection with our patients.

The forum will examine the case of a young Indigenous client with concurrent psychiatric conditions and severe stimulant/polysubstance disorder. The client was in tertiary care for four and a half years, presumed capable of making their own health, financial, and personal decisions and was transparent about their intent to use substances upon discharge.

Looking at the successes and challenges of this case can help us understand the complexity of supporting clients with concurrent psychiatric conditions and substance use disorders and explore discharge options that promote, cultural safety, trust and creative strategies for optimal health outcomes. “I think it's good to get together and discuss cases like this. To have different views and discuss the uncomfortable, this is how we learn and grow. We are doing good work but can always do better" shared panelist Jessica Lutwick, Indigenous MHSU SW, VCH.
