Virtual Interpreter devices are being rolled out across Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) to bring interpreting services to point-of-care staff in both acute and community settings. Implementation will occur in phases across different communities of care, with a targeted end date of December 2021.

Our pilot suggests that more than 25 per cent of VCH clients and patients have limited English proficiency (LEP), which can result in longer inpatient hospital stays and other potential health-associated risks. With access to over 240 languages, the Virtual Interpreter will significantly improve patient and clinician experience, reduce unnecessary hospital stays and visits and enhance the quality of care.

Throughout the new implementations, our Virtual Health team will be on-site to support care teams with education and training. Resources are also available on the virtual interpreter page on oneVCH.
