Project scope & objectives

Project Scope

Phase 1 was announced in February 2017 and entails expansion to the third floor of Jim Pattison Pavilion (JPP) North. The scope for this phase of work includes:

  • 16 new state-of-the-art and universally sized ORs

  • a new 40-bed consolidated pre-and post-operative unit

  • 1 new elevator serving JPP 2 and 3 North

  • new equipment and technology, including communication systems to manage activities across two floors

  • upgraded infrastructure, including HVAC, electrical and plumbing

  • additional storage  and new administrative spaces to support operations

The expansion will provide VGH 16 ORs in addition to the 21 rooms currently in use on the second floor of JPP North. Planning for Phases 2 and 3 — renovations of our current OR suite on JPP 2 North — will continue while expansion work is underway.

Project Objectives

By addressing critical infrastructure and maximizing JPOR’s capacity across two floors, we’ll achieve our objectives:

  • improve access to the quality surgical services patients need, when they need them, increasing the number of scheduled cases completed within waitlist targets

  • improve patient safety and quality outcomes

  • increase our patients’ and staff’s safety, wellbeing and comfort

  • reduce inefficiencies and case over-runs resulting in overtime

  • support innovation in surgical practice and advanced education opportunities

  • allow for future program growth and expansion

The project’s final scope, including the number of ORs, is contingent on budget and Ministry of Health approval. Our VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation has committed to raising $20 million towards Phase 1 expansion. *
